William 'Bill' Byrle Brewster

June 20, 1927 - February 16, 2018

William "Bill" Byrle Brewster, 90, of Medford, Oregon passed away Friday evening, February 16, 2018 at Roxy Ann Memory Community surrounded by his family. Born June 20, 1927 to William Edwin Brewster and Emma Louise (Knipfer) Brewster in Los Angeles, California, Bill grew up in the state of Washington and spent his childhood hunting, fishing, and trapping. In high school he moved to Boulder, Colorado and was drafted his junior year to serve the Army's 17th Infantry Division in Korea as a truck driver and courier at the end of World War II. He returned to Colorado to begin an education at the University of Colorado, and after receiving Christ changed majors and began schooling at Pasadena College in Southern California where he met his wife of 65 years, Ruth Louise Yocom. They dated for three months and were engaged secretly for three months before getting married June 6, 1952.

Bill’s life was defined by service. He began his teaching career in the Rogue Valley in 1955 and began working for the Central Point School District where he taught and had roles in school administration for 33 years. His passions included serving in leadership positions with the Good News Club and Child Evangelism Fellowship, in order to provide effective Christian education to children and gospel music, including singing in the Fisherman’s Quartet. He attended and was active at Medford Friends Church. After retirement he and Ruth spent time traveling to Arizona as "snowbirds," visiting family and attending Gospel quartet concerts around the US. He will be remembered for his love for the Lord, his smile, kind words, and listening ear. Bill’s impact and love will be felt for years to come. Southern Oregon was fortunate to have him as an educator, encourager, and mentor.

He was proceeded in death by his brothers, Clifton Brewster and Leslie Brewster and his sister, Roma Brewster. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Yocom) Brewster; sister, Lucille Pitt; brother-in-law, John Brewster; son, Michael Kent Brewster; and sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Karen Brewster and David and Rhonda Brewster. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Angie Shackelton, Levi Shackelton, Matthew Stone, Justin Kniffen, Shanae Brewster, Chris Kniffen, Emily Brewster, Micah Brewster, Hannah Pech, and Jeffrey Brewster; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held February 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Medford Friends Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that monetary gifts be given to Medford Friends Church for camp and college scholarships, as well as to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Southern Oregon.
