Kathleen (Kathy) Quilligan Bowles
April 18, 1942 - April 4, 2018
Kathleen (Kathy) Quilligan Bowles, of Eagle Point, Oregon, passed away on April 4 with her husband and son at her side. She was 75 year old.
Kathy was born on April 18, 1942 at the University Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan, where her father, Dr. James Joseph Quilligan, was completing his medical internship. Her mother, Estelle Klosky Quilligan, was a registered nurse, and had been a flight attendant for American Airlines at a time when all attendants had to be registered nurses. Early in Kathy’s childhood, the family moved from Michigan to Dallas, Texas, and then in her teen years moved once more to Southern California, where her father was a professor of pediatrics and the director of the virus lab for Loma Linda University. Kathy had three sisters, Sue “Quilligan” Martin, Laura Quilligan, and Dr. Maureen Quilligan.
Kathy graduated from Reseda High School in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California, where she had been very active in the drill team and student government. She attended Pierce Community College near the family home in Woodland Hills. She earned her associate degree and also met the love of her life, Mike Bowles, while attending. Together with their very close friends, Connie Bjorklund and Wally Boggess, the four then enrolled at Chico State in Northern California and all four pursued their majors, Elementary Education and Secondary Education. The two couples, Kathy and Mike, and Connie and Wall,y were married in 1964 between their Junior and Senior years of college, and successfully completed their bachelor’s degree programs at Chico State the following year.
Kathy taught elementary school classes at Travis Air Force Base while Mike completed his graduate work in Ag Education at the University of California at Davis. The following year, the young couple moved to Porterville, California, where Mike began his teaching VoAg career and Kathy continued teaching elementary school. Their two children were born while living in Porterville; a son, Brent Russell Bowles and a daughter, Wendi Denise (Bowles) Workinger.
In 1971, the young family moved to Eagle Point, Oregon where Mike accepted a teaching position in the VoAg Department at Eagle Point High School, and Kathy taught elementary classes at Glenn D. Hale Elementary School.
The young couple partnered with Mike’s parents and purchased a small ranch in Eagle Point in 1975. Kathy devoted more of her time to the business of the ranch and left the teaching field in the following years. In 2004, three years after Mike retired from teaching, the couple visited London and Paris for a month’s worth of sightseeing. Kathy had always wanted to travel to France and visit the “City of Lights” from her time in high school when she was enrolled in a French language class.
The couple hosted a dinner to celebrate their fifty years of marriage in 2014, inviting family and friends to celebrate with them. It was a grand evening and one that provided many hours of joyful memories for Kathy and Mike. By this time, Wendi had married and had two sons, grandsons for Kathy, Luke and Kyle.
A celebration of life will be held in early summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the “Eagle Point High School Class of 1978” endowed scholarship where Mike is honored, and Kathy will be also. Donations may be sent to D9 Foundation, PO Box 1166, Eagle Point, OR 97524. Be sure to write “Kathy Bowles Scholarship” on the memo line of the check.
