Clinton Richard Phelps

February 18, 1929 - April 22, 2018

Clinton Phelps passed away April 22, 2018 at his home in Jacksonville, Oregon with his wife Susan at his side.

Clinton was born in Safford, Arizona to Roy and Jessie Phelps. He spent the first 13 years of his life growing up in various locations throughout the wilds of Arizona. The lessons he learned in these early years helped make him the self-reliant man that so many had came to know throughout his life.

In 1942, the Phelps family moved to Ashland, Oregon, due to a traumatic injury to his father, Roy. Upon this move to Oregon, Clinton attended the 8th grade for only three weeks, then left school to earn a living and provide for his mom and dad, as well as his five sisters.

In these early years of work, Clinton purchased a truck at age 14 and made two trips a day across the Greensprings Highway to Klamath Falls where he purchased bricks and hay and brought them back to sell in the Ashland area. This was the beginning of a career that included his skills in land development, logging, and as a self-contractor.

Clinton had a great love for playing the guitar and singing. He would often share this great talent at family gatherings. Another of his great loves was participating in and watching bull-riding, horse racing, and rodeos.

Throughout his life, Clinton was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As an adult leader, Clinton was a positive influence in the lives of so many, but especially the countless young men that he worked with through the years. Among many of his strong testimonies, Clinton was a firm believer of paying a “full, and honest tithe.” A principle that he taught and lived by throughout his entire life.

Clinton was known as a person of great compassion who would always provide for those in real need. Whether it was providing firewood for the widows, his time, or sharing his financial resources, Clinton would always rise to the call when help was needed.

Clinton is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan; his daughters, Judy Bangerter, Lavon Rowley and husband, Larry, Denise Keitke and husband, George, and Marion Reed and husband, Vern; son, Robie Phelps and wife, Sue; step-son, Alex P. Pringle and wife, Patty; step-daughter, Sheryl Pringle; sisters, Lola Carley, Fawn Packer, Fern Taylor, and Dorothy Utter; 18 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Clinton ws preceded in death by his dad, Roy; mom, Jessie Phelps; wife, Pearl Muir Phelps; and his sister, Carol Ann Wasden.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2018 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bellinger Chapel, 3456 Bellinger Lane, Medford, OR 97501, with a viewing at 10:00 a.m. Dedication of the grave will be held immediately following at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Special thank you to neighbors Don and Brandi Tolner and family for their love and care of Clint.
