East Antelope fire nears complete containment

The East Antelope fire near White City was fully lined and 90% mopped up as of Monday morning. The fire started Saturday and burned 49 acres of private and federal land. The cause is under investigation.

“Firefighters were able to make this tremendous amount of progress during Sunday’s day shift and through the night,” said Natalie Weber, public information officer for the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District. “Operations today will focus on reaching near, if not complete, containment.”

An infrared drone flight Sunday night revealed hotspots in the fire perimeter, where crews focused their efforts overnight. Another scan is scheduled for Monday night to identify any potential areas of concern.

Road closures in the area have been lifted and evacuation orders for nearby residents have been reduced to Level 1 “Be Ready.”

“We would also like to thank the veterans who have spent their Memorial Day weekend with us, once again protecting our community; your efforts on the fire and in your military service are much appreciated,” Weber said.
