Letters to the editor

We never learn

In Britain in 1862, William Banting, 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 202 pounds, was ill and had great difficulty walking, climbing stairs, etc. One of the doctors he consulted, William Harvey, ear surgeon, recommended that he change his diet. Fish or meat with vegetables and fruit. No flour products, potatoes, sugar, etc. (High protein, low carb).

He lost 46 pounds and recovered his health. He lived to age 81.

He felt so good that he published a Letter on Corpulence. Many people also changed their diet with consequent improvement in their health.

But the British medical profession blasted the diet as ... unscientific and couldn't be explained in biochemical terms.

Plus ?a change, plus c'est la m?me chose! ' Victor Abel, Medford

Another flip-flop

John Kerry rushed to Washington from the presidential campaign trail to cast a vote to ban certain types of hunting ammunition. The ammunition on the list was the .30-30 Win., .308 Win. (762 NATO). .223 Rem. (5.56 NATO). and the 30-06. All four were named during debate on Sen. Kennedy's amendment 2619 to Senate bill 1805, March 2.

— As every hunter and shooter knows ' and Sen. Kerry should know if he were really the hunter and shooter he claims he is ' those are among the most popular hunting, competition and varmint rounds in the nation. Kerry claims to support the Second Amendment as interpreted, and hunters. It looks like another flip-flop to me, telling hunters one thing, and voting on the Senate floor just the opposite. ' Dave Cook, Medford

Get a life

All we seem to do in Medford is talk and talk some more, about roads, off-ramps, sports parks, Wal-Mart, rules and Medford vision at election time.

Talking about all these things until the issue is completely dead is why Medford is sometimes called Deadford.

Medford really needs to get a life! ' Tom Rolie, Medford

Impeach them all

Clinton and Nixon faced impeachment for relatively minor offenses compared to the worldwide horrible and severely damaging offenses being committed daily by the Bush administration (including Bush, Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Rumsfeld, and so on).

Impeachment comes to mind. Can an entire administration be impeached? Sounds reasonable to me in this case. ' Wanda Ward, Ashland

How would he feel?

What Neil Goldschmidt did was to rape a 14-year-old girl for nine months and then use his influence and money to stay out of jail. For Les AuCoin do call this a sexual relationship and claim that it was revealed only to bring Goldschmidt down is disgusting. How would AuCoin feel if his daughters had been raped for several months when they were 14? ' Richard Avery, Jacksonville

Rename the parties

The problem with our political party system is not the differences between Democrats and Republicans ' it's the differences between liberals and conservatives. I consider myself to be a conservative independent, and even though I disagree with some of their policies, I usually vote Republican because they more nearly reflect my beliefs.

I am sometimes chided by Republican friends for voting for Democrats, but when Democrats reflect my beliefs, I vote for them. This problem is most visible when one of our elected representatives changes from the party of those who elected him to the opposition party.

Renaming our political parties Liberals and Conservatives would certainly end a lot of confusion! ' Gene Rushing, Medford
