Central Point can do better

Another new owner and continued neglect and disrespect for Central Point's Historic Cemetery.

Last September, members of the Church of Latter Day Saints dedicated their day of service to cleaning up a number of historic cemeteries in our valley. They turned out in force and did a wonderful job in several cemeteries, including Central Point. They bagged and neatly piled the debris off the roadways for removal by the owners.

This was accomplished in all the cemeteries where they worked with the exception of Central Point, where the pile of bags, branches and limbs remained for six long months. On Saturday, March 18, two friends and hard-working and dedicated volunteers at the Eastwood IOOF Cemetery in Medford took it upon themselves and hauled four truckloads of bags to the dump. The branches and limbs were covered with ants and could not be removed by hand.

Once again it took residents from outside Central Point to get involved and try to correct a bad situation. Can't the city force the property owner to maintain and clean up the grounds? Certainly the city and residents of Central Point can do better than this.

No-win wage hike

My husband and I have owned a small business in Medford for 37 years. We have not raised prices for 10 years, thus growing the business and keeping the employees busy with more volume.

Steady, reliable employees mean better service and satisfied customers. We raise salaries as we can, a decision that should be determined by owners, investors, managers etc., not by government. Unless you have owned a business you don't understand that when an employee gets a raise he pays more in taxes, the business pays more in FDIC, workers comp and matching taxes and fees. The only one that benefits is government!

Eventually, when wages go up the business will have to raise the cost for their goods and services to cover the increase. Those seniors on fixed incomes get hit the hardest. And the worker that just got a raise saw the raise gobbled up with higher cost of living — sad but true!

Downside of wage hike

I respect Michelle Glass for her article/reasonings, "Region can benefit from higher wages on Sunday, March 13; however, there's a different reality for small businesses than what sounds good on paper. She doesn't address the burden of employers paying FDIC, workers comp, fees and taxes increasing with those risen wages on the employee.

We managed a convenience store/gas station from 1993-2008, and were hands-on employers, there all the time, eating, breathing, sleeping our little business. It was frustrating for us to have to pay the higher wage to our first-time high school wage earners which disallowed us to spread the pay properly to our store cashiers, who carried much more responsibility, and/or reward the employee for good attitude, initiative or seniority.

People thought with the price of gas we were making a killing. Not so! Don't know what the margins are now, but from 1993-2008 we were lucky to make 8-12 cents on the gallon and in the slower months we were lucky to pay ourselves.
