The most terrible moment

When someone stole the Hillary sign from my yard on Election Day, I knew we were in big trouble. Sure enough, we are. Did people not read? Not listen? Not think? This is the most terrible moment in American history, and we are going to pay for this.

Forced out of Ashland

Avarice (noun)

1. extreme greed for wealth or material gain.

Synonyms: greed, greediness, acquisitiveness, cupidity, covetousness, rapacity, materialism, mercenariness; rare: pleonexia; informal: money-grubbing, affluenza.

Avarice and greed allude to "Protesters demand end to Ashland rent increases" (Mail Tribune, Oct. 17). I stand in 100 percent solidarity and support of these picketers. They are justly angry and upset with CPM Real Estate Services Inc., who relocated to Ashland from the outside. Therefore, with Ashland and the Rogue Valley becoming unaffordable, Californicated, uppity, yuppity and elitist, I was forced out and had to relocate to the Klamath Basin. I originally moved to Ashland in 1986, 30 years ago.

I’m now a Merrill (Klamath County) resident. Merrill is a semi-rural farming community of 850 residents 21 miles southeast of Klamath Falls (my birthplace) along Highway 39.

To learn more about rent-gouging, greed and avarice in Ashland, I endorse the online article: “CPM Real Estate Services-Yelp.” Read the posted complaints, grievances, and rants against this rogue real estate cartel!

I will have your back

My father was an immigrant. My daughter is Asian. My brother is gay. And I am a straight, old, professional, white woman.

I will be dead before climate change has an ever more egregious impact on planet Earth. I no longer need the services of Planned Parenthood. My heterosexual marriage is in no risk of being invalidated. I am on Medicare, so the repeal of the Affordable Care Act will have no impact on me. No one in my circle fears deportation. The color of my skin continues to give me privilege.

The despair I feel today has to do with my daughter and granddaughter and their futures, as well of the futures of other people of color; hard-fought-for rights of women; my gay family and friends; the planet for future generations; and religious freedom.

I am not at risk. And I will fight for Planned Parenthood, LGBTQ rights, women's rights and religious freedom. I don't know what form this will take, but I can commit to this: If they "come after you" I will do my very best to have your back.

God help America

For years Republicans have cultivated an alternate reality in which President Obama is anti-American and global warming is a hoax. It finally bore fruit.

In Trump they found their consummate champion: a belligerent racist, birther and climate change denier who promises to do for America what he did for Trump Steaks or his Atlantic City casinos — so much for delusions of American exceptionalism.

Vladimir Putin helped Trump, knowing that he’d be like a malignant tumor in our body politic. Now that the mud wrestling is over, it will be interesting to see which of his campaign promises he’ll pursue first: suing the women he groped, locking up his opponent or going after that “Mexican” judge presiding over his fraud case. God help America.
