Reason to be proud

The Medford School District has earned the right to be very proud.

Two of its accomplished leaders — Jackson Elementary School Principal Kelly Soter and McLoughlin Middle School Principal Linda White — were recently named as the outstanding principals in their categories by the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators and the Oregon Elementary School Principals Association (Mail Tribune, April 25).

Kelly Soter is an inspirational administrator who seeks partners in education far beyond the walls of the building. The Oregon Community Foundation has supported her vision for a true neighborhood school in West Medford since 2013 — through grants to build strong connections between early learning, parents and the K-12 school system.

OCF is honored to work with Kelly Soter and the entire Jackson Elementary team. Here’s hoping she wins the National Elementary School Principal of the Year award she so richly deserves!

A huge loss

For the last 15 years I have attended the Rogue Valley Manor Sale and left each year with so many treasures. It is with deep sadness that I found out from many of the wonderful volunteers that this year will be the last.

I have gotten to know so many of them (especially the ones in the book section). They work tirelessly, with such enthusiasm, and with a genuine desire to please each and every customer. On Saturday I was told the book prices would drop dramatically at 2 p.m. On Sunday morning I was walking on the main level and one of the volunteers actually came to find me to let me know the rules had changed and “I’d better get upstairs quickly.” Talk about amazing service. It was my favorite sale of the year and I will truly miss many of the wonderful volunteers.

Marching for sanity

In 2011 the late Carl Sagan observed:

"We've arranged a society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science and technology, and this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"

Today we see Trump, Walden, etc. blithely ignoring scientific facts as they lust after fossil fuel profits at our expense. Consequently and unbelievably, people have been compelled to march and plead for science and sanity from their own government!

And it only took 100 days to transform our Environmental Protection Agency into the Environmental Pollution Agency. The ignorant and the self-serving now feed upon us: trading health care for warfare, water for oil and gas and life on earth for short-term profits.

Don’t let the con artists con you. Chase the money-grubbers and the ignorant ideologues out of our government. Stand up for science, health care and education. Avoid the corporate/cable media and their propaganda. (FOX, CNN, MSNBC,etc) Promote local food, energy and resilience. Care for each other.

Support Oregon’s Clean Energy Jobs Bill (HB 2135).
