Hurry to outdoor ice skating near Bend

If you thought it was too late to let wobbly ankles protect you from a high-speed slide across a cold and wet sheet of outdoor ice, guess again.

Anyone can find an indoor rink to skate on. The real challenge is finding a place in nature's fresh air, where you can really smell the pines while you twirl, spin and race in relative safety.

Bend residents are fortunate to have two outdoor skating rinks to choose from, the Inn of the Seventh Mountain Resort and the nearby Sunriver Village Mall.

Seventh Mountain features an 8,000-square-foot rink and — depending on weather — typically opens Dec. 1 and shuts down by the end of March. Skate lessons and rentals are available.

The Sunriver Village Mall rink is about 10 miles south of Bend and extends its skating season into late April with the help of a sunscreen cover that keeps the ice from melting away.

With an underground chiller and three daily Zamboni trips across the ice, Sunriver takes a lot of pride in the quality of its skating surface. Skate lessons are not available, but rentals are.

For information, contact Inn of the Seventh Mountain Resort at 1-800-452-6810 or Sunriver Village Mall at 541-593-5948.
