Greenway 'trotters' gobble path

Instead of taking advantage of the Thanksgiving holiday by sleeping in, 402 athletes worked up their appetites Thursday morning at the annual Turkey Trot 7.5- and two-mile fun runs organized by Southern Oregon Runners.

On two out-and-back courses along the Bear Creek Greenway, friends and families trotted their stuff with speed and holiday cheer.

In the early miles of the longer event, a flock of frontrunners blazed through Phoenix together like there was a fire in the kitchen. Southern Oregon success story Max King took home the bird in the 7.5-mile race with a swift and comfortable time of 38:38. Suzanne Ray was the quickest female trotter in 52:10.

The two-mile scramble saw 257 participants exhibit the holiday spirit with chef costumes and turkey-leg hats, with some running hand-in-hand through the frigid morning air.

Acting as if they were late for dinner, Joey Nelson hurried to the finish line in 10:20 and Laura Raber in 12:34.
