Endurance on the trails
Granite Man Endurance Weekend at Applegate Lake started Saturday with four running events: the Grouse Gap 5K, 11-mile Mountain Run, 30K Trail Run and 60K Ultra Trail Run.
Central Point's Neil Olsen pushed himself over the 60K (37-mile) course to win in 4:51:48. He was chased by Beverley Anderson-Abbs, the only woman in the race, who crossed the line in 4:58:18.
JC Callans won the 30K in 2:05:49 and Tawnei McDonald was first for the women in 2:32:45.
Ashland runners Erik Skaggs and Jenn Shelton repeated as winners in the 11-mile mountain run, breaking their own course records in 1:12:40 and 1:29:43, respectively, on the trail that switchbacks up Collings Mountain.
Tyrone Raber from Eagle Point was the first racer in the Grouse Gap 5K to cross the finish line, winning in 29:24. Pim Solof won the female division in 35:15.
"What a beautiful weekend," said Medford's Joe Griffin, a true endurance athlete who placed fourth in the mountain run and returned to the lake Sunday to finish second in the individual duathlon.
