KS Wild hike

Saturday, Oct. 9: Hike to see salmon jumping Rainie Falls on the Rogue on their way back from the ocean. The hike to Rainie Falls is an easy to moderate, 4.5-mile hike through low-elevation forest. Meet at 9 a.m. at Evo's in Ashland or at the Rainie Falls trailhead at the base of the bridge where Grave Creek enters the Rogue at 10:30 a.m.

Sierra Club hikes

Saturday, Sept. 25: Moderate, six-mile hike in Soda Mountain Wilderness (to the lookout and Boccard Point). Call Cathy Edwards for details at 541-210-0204.

Rogue Valley Walkers

Saturday, Sept. 25: Explore old Medford with the Rogue Valley Walkers. This is a 10K walk, with a 5K optional route available. Meet at Food For Less off Biddle Road at 9 a.m. For more information call 541-326-7583.

Lithia Park walks

Through Sept. 29: Free, guided walks in Ashland's Lithia Park, sponsored by the Ashland Parks and Recreation Department. The walks take about 90 minutes. Walks leave at 10 a.m. every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday from the plaza entrance.

Pine to Palm 100-mile Endurance Run

Saturday, Sept. 18: The 100-mile course starts in Williams and winds its way east through the mountains on a mixture of single-track trails and dirt roads to the finish line in Ashland. The route covers more than 20,000 feet of climbing and descents, including three climbs up to and over 7,000 feet. Entry fee is $300 (online registration only, through UltraSignUp.com.) Siskiyou Challenge

Saturday, Sept. 25: This five-leg, multi-sport event traces a 46-mile circle around Ashland, exploring the city's parks, the surrounding countryside and Emigrant Lake. Legs include an 11K run, a 3K lake kayak, a 25-mile road-bike tour, a 9-mile mountain-bike loop and a 5K run. Racers may enter solo or in teams of two to five racers. While athletes are circling Ashland, a fun run/walk will circle the block of ScienceWorks and festivities will occur throughout the day, including local food, live music and massage. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 24. Entry fees range from $75 for solo racers to $350 for corporate-sponsored teams. For more information, go online to www.siskiyouchallenge.org.

Stagecoach Run

Saturday, Oct. 9: The annual 5K and 10K runs begin at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Oregon and West D streets in Jacksonville. Early registration is $15 ($12 for Southern Oregon Runners members), and $7 for students. After Oct. 5 cost is $20. Lots of drawings for cash and other prizes. Ride the Rogue

Saturday, Sept. 18: The 4th annual Ride the Rogue event is centered around Palmerton Park in Rogue River. This year's event offers new ride routes, a gourmet feast, live music and activities for the whole family. Bike routes include 100 miles, 65 miles, 25 miles and two miles, along with a four-mile historic nature hike, wagon ride and a three-mile river walk. All proceeds support the development of the Rogue River Recreational Corridor and Greenway project. For more information, go to ridetherogue.org.

Every Monday: Siskiyou Velo Club 25-mile coffee ride begins at 10:30 a.m. at Colver Park in Phoenix and journeys to Jacksonville. Gently rolling terrain, brisk pace. No ride leader.

Every Wednesday: A 25- to 40-mile Siskiyou Velo Club show-and-go ride begins at 11 a.m. at Rogue Valley Roasting Co. in Ashland. Moderate terrain, brisk pace. No ride leader.

Recurring mountain bike rides

Every Tuesday, women's rides, Grants Pass: From April through October, Bike Kraft hosts a weekly women's mountain bike ride that meets and leaves from its shop at 6 p.m. The rides last about two hours on average and accommodate many skill levels. Every Wednesday, Jacksonville: Sponsored by Cycle Analysis, these rides are for all ages and abilities and are group-oriented. They begin at 6 p.m. from Cycle Analysis, 535 N. Fifth St., Jacksonville, and include the John's Peak trail system. Every ride ends with free refreshments supplied by Cycle Analysis. Helmets are required. Rogue Valley Audubon Society

Sunday, Sept. 19: Monthly third-Sunday birdwalk to Ashland Pond led by Jeff Tufts (541-227-8465). Meet at the Ashland Dog Park, north end of Helman Street, next to the water treatment plant at 8 a.m. Call for more information.

Wednesday, Oct. 6: Monthly first-Wednesday birdwalk along Little Butte Creek. Meet at the gated entrance to TouVelle Road and the Denman Wildlife Area on the west side of Agate Road at 8:30 a.m., or in the Apple Peddler Restaurant parking lot, at the intersection of Highway 140 and Highway 62 in White City, at 8:20 a.m. Easy walking on dirt, about 2 1/2 miles over three hours. Project FeederWatch

Help count birds that visit the feeders at North Mountain Park while learning to identify species with expert guidance. This is an opportunity for all-level birders to get acquainted with local birds and mingle with other birders. The program will take place 9 to 10 a.m. on alternate Saturdays from Nov. 13 through March 2011 (except Saturday, Dec. 25). The information collected will be submitted to Cornell University's FeederWatch project, a nationwide bird-monitoring effort. Pre-registration is not required for this free program. Ages 10 and up. North Mountain Park is located at 620 N. Mountain Ave. in Ashland.

Wings and Wine Gala

Saturday, Sept. 25: Klamath Bird Observatory fundraiser runs from 6 to 10 p.m. at Hanley Farm in Central Point. The evening includes complimentary wine, tasty bites by Helena Darling Fine Catering, a not-so-silent auction and live music by Siskiyou Summit.
