Running the Rogue Wolf Loop
Thursday, Aug. 16: Join world-renowned ultra marathon runner Ryan Ghelfi to get the inside scoop on running the Rogue Wolf Loop, in the Sky Lakes Wilderness, at 6:30 p.m. at REI, 85 Rossanley Drive, Medford. With just over 4,000 feet of elevation gain over 25 miles, this route features the Middle Fork Rogue River, a series of mountain lakes, old-growth forests and the Pacific Crest Trail. Get the inside scoop on running the loop. Pick up maps, GPS files and route details. King Of The Rogue
Saturday, Aug. 18: The sixth annual King of the Rogue whitewater event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ti’lomikh Falls overlook, 996 Upper River Road in Gold Hill. This year the coordinators have expanded the activities and classes to accommodate more water crafts and levels of expertise. There will be events for inflatable rafts, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. This year’s event will feature a Riverwalk Marketplace and an expanded viewing area overlooking the race course along Upper River Road. Follow the signs for parking. REI Talk: Travel Light
Wednesday, Aug. 22: Traveling should never be a burden. An REI specialist will offer practical tips on lightening your load while maximizing the experience. You’ll leave with the tools to critically examine your own packing lists and keep overweight baggage at bay on your next adventure. Rogue Valley Audubon Society
Wednesday, Sept. 5: RVAS holds first-Wednesday bird walks at Denman Wildlife Area. The walks begin at 8:30 a.m. and end before noon. Species observed by walk participants are entered in the Cornell Ornithological Laboratory’s eBird database. Participants will need to purchase an ODFW area parking permit. Rogue Fly Fishers
6 p.m. Mondays: Learn or hone fly casting skills through Sept. 10 at Hedrick Middle School’s athletic field, 1501 E. Jackson St., Medford. The group does not meet on holidays or rainy days. Lithia Park nature walks
Sundays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays: Ashland Parks and Recreation offers free, guided nature walks in Lithia Park from 10 to 11:30 a.m. May through September. Meet at the park entrance, across from the Plaza in Ashland. Preregistration is not required. For more information, call 541-488-5340.
Every Saturday: Brisk rides are for strong riders who want to ride in a paceline with occasional sprints and brisk climbs. Speeds are above 20 mph on flats and average of 15 to 18 mph overall. The route and starting point will vary — expect some climbing and, in fact, on most days, a lot. Riders should know how to make repairs. Riders are expected to review online and understand the planned route. The Brisk group is not a no-drop group, slower riders are discouraged. For details, call Dennis Cramer at 541-773-5804.
Every Saturday: Velo Mello meets at various places and rides about 20 miles at 11 to 13 mph on flats with few, if any, pacelines.
