Cross-country ski outing
Sunday, Feb. 10: The Southern Oregon Nordic Club will hold a ski outing on the Burton Flat Loop, a 5.5-mile intermediate ski tour. Meet at South Pederson Sno-Park area on Dead Indian Memorial Road. Call Kevin Wood at 541-261-3547 for time, additional details and potential car pooling.
Saturday, Feb. 16: Help experts count birds that visit feeders at North Mountain Park Nature Center, 620 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland, from 9 to 10 a.m. Results will be submitted to Cornell University’s FeederWatch program. Admission is free. Call 541-488-6606.
Rogue Valley Walkers

Bavarian Night at Mt. Ashland
Saturday, Feb. 16: Bavarian Night is an annual fundraiser for the Mt. Ashland Ski Patrol. It’s a family-oriented event including night skiing, a fireworks show, live music, food specials and a raffle auction. For details, see www.mtashland.com/events-things-to-do/.
Sunday, Feb. 17: KS Wild’s Michael Dotson will lead a moderately difficult, 3-4 mile winter snowshoe hike above the Rogue Valley from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Snow accumulation and levels will determine what trail the group hits. Hikers will likely find themselves among the snow-covered evergreens on Mount Ashland or in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. Participants must have their own snowshoes, which can be rented for the day from several local retailers. Sign up at www.kswild.org/events to get more details about carpooling and what to bring. Space is limited to a 18 snowshoers.
Rogue River Half-Marathon

Cougar Mountain hike
Saturday, Feb. 23: This moderately easy, three-mile hike, organized by KS Wild, goes through oak groves on the south face and up to the summit of Cougar Mountain. The trail is in the Wellington Butte Roadless Area, a proposed 7,527-acre wilderness area in the foothills of the Applegate Valley. The trail is also part of the proposed Applegate Ridge Trail, which would lead from Grants Pass to Ruch and link with the Jack-Ash Trail, which will connect Jacksonville and Ashland. Crater Lake snowshoe hikes
Through April 28: Ranger-guided snowshoe hikes are offered on weekends and holidays through April. They start at 1 p.m., last two hours, and cover 1 to 2 miles of moderate-to-strenuous terrain. No previous snowshoeing experience is necessary. Snowshoes are provided free, and there is no cost for the tour (apart from the winter entrance fee of $15 per vehicle). Participants should be at least 8 years old. Pets are not allowed. Advance reservations are required. For more information and to sign up, call 541-594-3100. The visitor center is open daily.
Registration is open: The fourth annual Up & Down: Ride the Cascade-Siskiyou Scenic Bikeway will take place Saturday, July 20, starting at Emigrant Lake. Two routes: Scenic Bikeway with 49 miles and 4,900 feet of climbing; Spencer Creek with 96 miles and 7,800 feet. Register at upanddownashland.com.
Every Saturday: Brisk rides are for strong riders who want to ride in a paceline with occasional sprints and brisk climbs. Speeds are above 20 mph on flats and average of 15 to 18 mph overall. The route and starting point will vary — expect some climbing and, in fact, on most days, a lot. Riders should know how to make repairs. Riders are expected to review online and understand the planned route. The Brisk group is not a no-drop group, slower riders are discouraged. For details, call Dennis Cramer at 541-773-5804.
Every Saturday: Velo Mello meets at various places and rides about 20 miles at 11 to 13 mph on flats with few, if any, pacelines.
