This summer and spring will be very busy seasons for the Siskiyou Violins. The string ensemble consisting of 28 advanced students of Faina Podolnaya of Ashland will be giving four performances between June 1 and June 20.
The internationally award-winning ensemble specializes in baroque, classical, contemporary and fiddling styles and has performed throughout Southern Oregon. Performances have included a joint concert with the visiting Rimsky-Korsakov Quartet.
The group has been invited to perform at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles on June 20. It will be participating in the 2008 Los Angeles International Band and Orchestra Festival, which runs June 20-24. The festival is limited to six high-school age instrumental ensembles and two college groups by audition only. However, the Siskiyou Violins was accepted without auditioning because it received the Gold Award for excellence at the 2005 New York Youth Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall. Both of these festivals were organized by World Projects International Music Productions.
The Siskiyou Violins set up four local performances as a way of getting ready for the Los Angeles concert, increase public awareness about the group, and help raise the necessary funds to make the trip. Even though the performances are free, donations are welcome.
The remaining two concerts are 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 408 N. Mount Shasta Blvd., Mount Shasta; and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Temple Emek Shalom, 1800 E. Main St., Ashland.
The students will perform Concerto for Two Violins by Bach, a Hungarian Dance by Brahms, a traditional fiddle tune and more.
The difficulty of the music increases the students' level of responsibility and discipline, which also helps them to develop beyond their own perceived level of talent.
The Siskiyou Violins will be the first group to perform in the new Green Show format at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The New Green Show for 2008 is based on the theme "Community, Collaboration, Commitment" and is curated by OSF associate producer Claudia Alick.
The Siskiyou Violins will perform at 7:15 p.m. Monday, June 3, in the OSF courtyard on the bricks before the evening theater performances. The Siskiyou Violins Green Show performance will last approximately 35 minutes.
Many of Podolnaya's students play in the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon and many have distinguished themselves musically by participating and winning awards in competitions.
