Happy New Year!

If you feel like saying good-bye to 2008 and hello to 2009 in a festive way, you'll have plenty of options. New Year's Eve in the Rogue Valley is a night full of celebrations ranging from classical music to rock and from plays to parties.

NEW YEAR'S EVE SQUARE DANCE: The Star Promenaders will host a New Year's Eve dance Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Rogue Valley Square Dance Center, 3377 Table Rock Road, Medford. Pre-rounds will start at 8:30 p.m. and mainstream and student level squares will be from 9 p.m. to midnight. A potluck buffet will open at 10 p.m. Call 770-5182.

NEW YEAR'S EVE BALL: Ring in the new year starting at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Evergreen Ballroom, 6088 Crater Lake Ave., Medford. Dress in semi-formal attire for the dance party, take a short dance lesson and enjoy a dessert buffet. Advance tickets cost $12 (before Saturday, Dec. 27). Tickets will cost $15 at the door, $10 for youth. Call 770-5198.

GLOBAL PEACE DANCE: Join Dances of Universal Peace and dance circles around the world in their 15th year of celebration from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, at Headwaters, 84 Fourth St., Ashland. Admission is by donation. Call 482-4902.

NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY AT MEDFORD'S RED LION: Celebrate the new year at three parties to be held at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Red Lion Hotel, 200 N. Riverside Ave. Rock band Red X will perform in the hotel's lounge, DJ Hot Nights will spin music for dancing in the petite ballroom and the HouseCats will present rock and pop in the grand ballroom. Admission is $15, $25 for couples and includes entry to all three parties, party favors and a champagne toast. A dinner buffet will be available at 7 p.m. Cost is $35, $65 for couples and includes the parties. Lodging packages also are available. Call 779-5811.

MULTIGENERATIONAL DANCE PARTY: Havurah Shir Hadash hosts the fourth annual multi-generational dance party featuring live music with Jerry Attrick and the Pacemakers at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 185 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland. The band's music ranges from klezmer to music of the '60s and '70s and contemporary classic dance tunes. Snacks and beverages will be available. Childcare will be available with advance reservations. Advance tickets are $10 per adult, $25 per family. At the door the evening of the event tickets will be $13 per person or $30 per family. MEDFORD ELKS NEW YEAR'S PARTY: Hors d'oeuvres, a dinner of tri-tip or chicken, live music by TJ & The Spurs, champagne and party favors will be offered during the Medford Elks' New Year's party to be held Wednesday, Dec. 31, in the Esquire Room at the Elks' lodge, 220 N. Central Ave., Medford. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and dinner and music will be at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $20 in advance; $22 at the door. Call 779-3933.

ASHLAND ELKS NEW YEAR'S PARTY: The Ashland Elks Lodge #944 presents a New Year's Eve Poseidon Adventure Ball Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Ashland Elks Lodge, 255 E. Main St. The Elks Lodge will be transformed into a giant underwater cruiser, complete with a life size upside-down cabin. There will be DJ dancing to the sounds of the 1970s until 1 a.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. The buffet and a screening of the 1972 disaster film, "The Poseidon Adventure" will begin at 8 p.m. Dancing starts at 10 p.m. A champagne toast and a balloon drop will be at midnight. Tropical "Love Boat" cruise wear, '70s costumes, or elegant cocktail attire requested. Tickets are $40 and are available at the lodge or at Jean-Louise in Ashland. teen dance party: Members of the Southern Oregon Drug Awareness teen leadership team will be hosting a black-light party from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Vibes Main 1, 821 N. Riverside Ave., Medford. A variety of music will be played throughout the night by DJ Poppa. The event is open to all high school-aged youth, Tickets are $10 at the door. Call 618-8423.

nightlife: The following clubs will have music on New Year's Eve: Alex's Plaza Restaurant, Applegate Lodge, Bella Union, 4 Daughters Irish Pub, G Street Bar and Grill, Habaneros Mexican Restaurant, Homestead Lounge, Johnny B's, The Laughing Clam, Pier 21, Roscoe's BBQ, Shady Cove Sports Bar & Grill, Shenanigan's Irish Pub, Stillwater and the Trophy Club. Winchester Inn Wine Bar: An intimate concert featuring vocalist Leslie Kendall and guitarist Ed Dunsavage will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the Winchester Inn Wine Bar, 35 S. Second St., Ashland. The $30 cover includes a choice of selected beverage and appetizer along with the music. Seating is very limited and reservations are suggested. Call 488-1113.

Music at St. Mark's: On Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 7 p.m., Music at St. Mark's will present its eighth annual New Year's Eve concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 426 W. Sixth St., Medford. The concert will be followed at approximately 9 p.m. by the Service of Night Prayer for the New Year from the New Zealand prayer book. Following the concert, a gala reception will be held in the church's Parish Hall. Those interested will then be able to return to a candlelit church for the short Night Prayer service. Doors for the concert will open at 6:30 p.m. All of the evening's activities are free. Call 858-8037.
