Old Stage Road at Woody's Pub
After playing throughout Southern Oregon for more than a year, the six-member Old Stage Road band has a recipe for music people love — a cup of country, a hand-full of classic rock, a few spoonfuls of blues mixed with a few original tunes.
The band comprises bassist Dave Wilson, keyboardist Gary Carlson, drummer Gabriel Johnston, guitarist Dennis Mertens, vocalist and guitarist Tom McReynolds and violinist and percussionist Miriam McReynolds.
"It's a fun group, but we're still really serious about music," Tom McReynolds said. "We want to play really good music."
The group will be playing at 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Woody's Pub and Grille, 42 N. Front St., Medford.
McReynolds bought his first guitar when he was 15 years old. He taught himself to play, and soon was playing in church worship bands. Although music was part of his life, he wouldn't form his own band until 2008.
His son, Ben, and daughter, Shannon, are musicians in the band, Cleopatra and the Nile River Boys. When Ben was away, McReynolds said he filled in as a vocalist for his son and enjoyed it so much and was inspired to form a band.
"I finally decided it was time to start my own band," he said.
McReynolds recruited both friends and people recommended to him to participate in the band. Carlson, McReynolds' neighbor, had jammed with him before. Wilson was a retired music teacher. Mertens had played in a band in the 1960s and had toured with Pat Boone and Andrae Crouch. Johnston, 32, the youngest member of the band, is a music instructor, and Miriam, McReynolds' wife, demonstrates the same aptitude for music as the rest of her family.
The band name came to McReynolds when he was driving to his home on Old Stage Road.
"When I was contemplating the name, I happen to be turning onto the road, and I saw the sign, and it hit me that that would be a good name for the band," he said.
Over the last year, the band has performed at Creekside Pub in Rogue River, Donnelly's, Woody's, the Medford Eagles, the Moose Lodge in Gold Hill and at private events.
"We're kind of casting our net on the water right now," said McReynolds. "We've had good reviews so far."
McReynolds said the band would like to begin playing at wine venues as well.
The band primarily plays a lot of cover songs, "but sometimes, we filter in some of our originals," McReynolds said.
The Old Stage Road set list includes cover songs by the Eagles, George Jones, Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ray Charles, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels and George Strait.
"We're taking December and the first part of January to implement new songs into the set list," said McReynolds.
Some of the bands original songs are "Since My Baby Left Me" (blues), "These Old Boots," "Hot Rod Betty" and "Cowboy's State of Mind" (country).
McReynolds said the band focuses on the vocal harmonies and "tries not to over instrumentalize."
There is no cover charge for their performance at Woody's.
