'In Sweet Joy'

The Southern Oregon Repertory Singers, directed by Paul French, embrace the holiday season with a festive choral concert that will include accompaniment by the Siskiyou Violins, as well as harp, organ and a woodwind quartet.

Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.

The concerts will feature several versions of "In Dulci Jubilo" by such composers as Johann Sebastian Bach, Robert Pearsall and Jetse Bremer, along with "Fantasia on Christmas Carols" by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and the premiere of a new carol by Jodi French of SORS set to words by Hildegard von Bingham, a German writer, composer, philosopher and Christian mystic.

The program also includes traditional carols by Gabriel Fauré and Benjamin Britten and contemporary ones by Gabriel Jackson and John Rutter, along with a sing-along led by the choir.

Musicologist Ed Wight will present lectures one hour before each concert.
