New York bands play Cebolla
New York bands Peter Stampfel and the Ether Frolic Mob, The Dust Busters and Jeffery Lewis are passing through Southern Oregon on their two-month "freak-folk" tour.
The three groups will play at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Cebolla Bar & Grill, 1951 Ashland St., Ashland.
Stampfel, formerly a member of '60s bands The Fugs and The Holy Modal Rounders, along with his new project, the Ether Frolic Mob, will uproot music from the Great American Songbook, "grab it by the throat and pull it inside out," according to the band's Facebook page.
Three members of the Mob — Walker Shepard, Craig Judelman and Eli Smith — also form string band The Dust Busters, that will be playing old-time songs, ballads, fiddle tunes and jug-band blues.
A guitarist, Lewis channels his self-deprecating humor and nihilistic world view into his music. His witty and sometimes crass music has been billed as anti-folk for its experimental, acoustic, punk sounds and autobiographical lyrics.
With his band, The Junkyard, Lewis' repertoire ranges from contemplative folk narratives to garage-rock.
According to Rolling Stone, his music is "weird ... but also downright inspiring."
Lewis signed to Rough Trade Records in 2001 and has released six albums with the company. His most recent, "A Turn in the Dream-Songs," was recorded on analog tape from a vintage recording studio in Manchester, England.
The cover charge to the show at Cebolla is $5. Call 541-708-0290.
