Farewell to Father Doug

For a little more than two years, Ashland rock band Father Doug was a rising force on the local music scene. Singer Sarah Mues, guitarist Brenton Clarke, bassist Garrett Skelton and drummer Nick Johnson met as students at Southern Oregon University. Like many bands started by schoolmates, graduation brought the band to a close.

"I was the first to graduate," Johnson says. "I was in Ashland for five years and wanted a change. I thought it would be best to walk away then."

Johnson took a few months to travel around Central America and then moved back to Ashland. When J.B. Nelson, host of local music podcast Low 'O' Radio, began a monthly showcase of local bands, he begged Father Doug to reunite for a proper farewell.

"The rest of the band is graduating this year," Johnson says. "When J.B. hit us up, I thought it was the perfect time to reunite."

Father Doug — along with its horn section, Kurt Langmeyer on trombone, Andrew Langenstein on trumpet and Jeff Newman on sax — will perform with BROTHER and The Tentacles at 8 p.m. Friday, June 13, at the Imperial Event Center, 40 N. Front St., Medford. Tickets cost $10 and are available in advance at Musichead, 350 S. Riverside Ave., Medford, and Zeplinz at 1632 Ashland St., Ashland, and 1110 Biddle Road, Medford.
