Joseph Yungen: Pianist Joseph Yungen will perform music by Alkan, Faure and Chopin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in the Music Recital Hall, 450 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. Originally from Eastern Oregon, Yungen has achieved an impressive list of accomplishments since his graduation from Crater High School and then Southern Oregon University. Winner of the Audience Favorite Award in the 2008 Seattle International Piano Competition, Yungen received First Prize in the 88th Annual Bruce P. Carlson Schubert Club Piano Competition in Minneapolis, the Ann Fehn Pianist’s First Prize in the 14th Annual Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition, and the Barr Award for Excellence in Accompanying. He attended the Music Academy of the West as a Collaborative Piano Fellow in 2012. ‘The Concert for New Year’s Eve’: Pianists Alexander Tutunov, Anson Sin and Laurie Anne Hunter, flutist Sherril Wood, violinist Kathleen Strahm, along with mezzo soprano Shelly Cox-Thornhill, baritone and violist Michael Sorensen, and James Keigher from Celtic duo Men of Worth will perform works by such composers as Brahms, Barber, Chopin, Medtner, and a dash of traditional Irish music, at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, 1615 Clark Ave. The concert closes with a sing-along of “Auld Lang Syne.” Overflow seating will be available in the Fellowship Hall with a live audio-visual camera feed. A reception will follow the concert. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
