Friday, April 5

Jerusalem String Quartet: The Israel-based Jerusalem String Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, and at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in the Music Recital Hall, 450 S. Mountain Ave., on the Southern Oregon University campus. Friday’s concert will feature music by Haydn, Bartók, and Beethoven; Saturday’s performance includes works by Ravel, Beethoven, and Debussy. ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’: This Tony Award-winning charmer takes place in a middle school gymnasium, where a handful of puberty-plagued nerds and brainiacs — overseen by grown-ups only marginally more developed — contends for the prize of the top speller in the county. A tuneful, poignant, hilarious look at the travails of competition. Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. ‘The Mikado’: Performed by the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players and the New York Asian American theatrical community, this production of the 1885 comedic opera offers a fresh historical context and diverse casting. The action begins in 1884 at the D’Oyly Carte Theater Company, where Gilbert and Sullivan meet with their producer, Richard D’Oyly Carte, to plan their next opera. What ensues is a dreamy love story satirizing Victorian culture, all set in a fictionalized Japan. Performance is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S.
