Black Tornado opens season with win over Highlanders

The North Medford baseball team started off the season on a positive note Wednesday with a 9-5 victory over North Eugene at North Medford High.

The Black Tornado overcame a 5-4, third-inning deficit with a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Andrew Jones gave up five runs, two of them earned, then gave way to Logan Odom, who pitched three hitless innings for the win.

North Eugene pitchers, on the other hand, combined for five balks, six walks and two hit batsmen.

North Medford's Zack Earle went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Jones was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

The Black Tornado travels to Bend on Friday for a nonconference doubleheader against Mountain View.

u MAZAMA JV 5-6, ST. MARY'S 2-2 — The Mazama junior varsity team scored three runs in the fourth inning of the first game to pull away in the season opener for both teams.

St. Mary's managed just three hits in the opener.

In Game 2, Paul Hume led the Crusaders with three hits and a run.

U SOUTH UMPQUA 6, NORTH VALLEY 4 — At Merlin, South Umpqua took advantage of six North Valley errors to come from behind and win the nonconference matchup.

For the Knights, Trista Morton went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI double. Kristen Allison added an RBI triple and Rachael Conard had an RBI double.

North Valley pitcher Casie Hinkle had six strikeouts.

U ST. MARY'S 6-8 ETNA 1-3 — At Etna, Calif., pitcher Brianna Williams had 26 strikeouts over both games to lead St. Mary's to a sweep of Etna in a nonconference doubleheader.

Williams had 15 strikeouts in the first game and 11 in the second game.

Claire Crowley went 3-for-6 on the day and had a double in the second game. Melissa Lass had a double in the first game.

St. Mary's totaled 10 stolen bases.
