Tornado boys score solid victory over Grizzlies

The North Medford boys tennis team continued its torrid streak to start the season with an easy victory over former Southern Oregon Conference foe Ashland on Tuesday at Varsity Courts.

The Black Tornado picked up impressive wins from both its Nos. 1 and 2 singles and doubles competitors to improve to 3-0 on the season with a 6-2 victory over the Grizzlies.

Michael Tribble, North's top singles player, cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Sean Cleveland. Teammate Colt Hoeptner downed Avi Silberstein, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

In doubles, the Tornado's top tandem of Tanner Borg and David Longmire blanked Jon Weighter and Kyle Lachmund, 6-0, 6-0, while Austin Schoenlein and David Tribble also rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tyler Suh and Tom Miner.

"Our No. 1 and 2 singles and doubles kids have been very dominant this season," said first-year North Medford coach Hal Borg. "None of them has dropped a set this year and No. 1 doubles has yet to lose a game."

North Medford now moves on to Southwest Conference action.

Its first opponent, South Eugene, should provide a stiff test when the teams face off April 3 in Eugene.

"South Eugene is probably one of the top preseason picks at state," said coach Borg. "They have most of their players back like we do.

"That's going to be a real fun battle. They're definitely our biggest competition."
