Butler, Nevin shine at Eagle Point Relays

EAGLE POINT — Kris Butler sailed to a fine early-season mark in the long jump and Eagle Point teammate Brandt Nevin won the javelin and pole vault to highlight action at the Eagle Point Coed Relays on Wednesday.

Butler, a senior, reached 20 feet, 1 inch in the long jump while Nevin vaulted 12-6 and threw the javelin 153-51/2.

The Eagle girls also fared well in the field events as Jamie Wells cleared 10-0 in the pole vault, Alyssa McClellan reached 116-9 in the javelin and Heather Vincent conquered 4-10 in the high jump.

Hidden Valley distance star Ashley Gilkey ran strong in a special 3,200-meter race, clocking 12 minutes, 39.3 seconds.

No team scores were kept.

u ASHLAND 7, ROSEBURG 1 — At Ashland, Sean Cleveland powered home two overhand winners in the final game to surge past Jordan Santos at No. 1 singles and lead Ashland to the nonconference win.

Cleveland, a junior, rebounded from a second-game loss to take charge in the third game and win going away.

The Grizzlies (2-1) also received a stellar effort from their No. 1 doubles team of Kyle Lachmund and John Weighter, who rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Logan Wetherell and Charles Daws. Lachmund and Weighter are playing doubles for the first time.
