Freshmen flourish as Comets clip Indians

ROSEBURG — A pair of freshmen had outstanding track and field debuts in helping Crater to a dual-meet win over Roseburg on Thursday.

Josh Dalton won the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) and the 110-meter hurdles (18.47 seconds) and finished second in the 300 hurdles (46.4), while Kelly Beck won the 100 in a respectable time of 11.44 and took second in the 200 in 23.44.

Aided by sweeps in the 300 hurdles, 1,500 and javelin, the Crater boys romped to an 82-62 win.

Adam Wazniewski won the javelin with a good early-season throw of 155-8. Other notable marks were turned in by Charles Fehl in the 400 (52.18) and Jake Keyser in the 800 (2:03.0).

Roseburg's Adam Brink, a two-time defending state pole vault champion, cleared 13-6 to easily win that event. He also nosed out Beck in the 200.

On the girls' side of the coed meet, Lori Barrett, Aimee Wingler, Lindsey Bascom and Kayleigh Tyerman combined to win the 4x400 relay, enabling Crater to snag a 72-69 win.

Barrett also won the 400 (1:02.97), Tyerman took the 1,500 (5:06.38) and Wingler claimed the 300 hurdles (50.52).

Beth Fuller had a fine day for the Indians, launching the shot put 34-1 and the discus 109-5. She also finished second in the javelin (100-11).

u ALL-SOUTHERN SKY CONFERENCE — At Eagle Point, Ashland's Austin Harfst shot a 78 to earn co-medalist honors and the Grizzlies edged Eagle Point for a narrow team win at Eagle Point Golf Course.

Mike Hagert and Trevor Lopez also had a 78 for Eagle Point.

As a team, Ashland fired a 325, while the Eagles took second with a 328.

U ALL-SKYLINE CONFERENCE — Phoenix swept the top four spots to claim first place in the six-team tournament at Centennial Golf Club.

Jesse Taylor shot a 77 to lead the Pirates to a 316 team score in challenging conditions on a course playing 6,900 yards. Taylor had a 37 on the front nine.

Hidden Valley was second at 347.

The Pirates' Michael Stanfield had a 37 on the back and carded a 79.
