Timely hits kick-start sweep by Black Tornado

REDDING, Calif. — North Medford produced some timely hits and parlayed them into a doubleheader sweep of Foothill in nonconference softball Tuesday.

The scores were 3-1 and 9-4.

Sophomore Taylor Schmidt was effective on the mound, throwing a five-hitter with seven strikeouts in Game 1 and firing an eight-hitter with six strikeouts in the nightcap.

Schmidt was especially effective against Foothill shortstop and UCLA-bound Samantha Camuso, holding her to just two hits on the day. One year earlier, Camuso tormented the Tornado with a 7-for-8 performance.

North Medford blew open the second game with a six-run fifth inning. Amanda Volgarino hit a two-run single and Kassie Choi belted a two-run double to fuel the charge.

Volgarino, Choi and Justine Sandoval each had two hits in Game 2 as the Tornado ran its season record to 5-4.

The losses lowered Foothill's record to 14-4.

North Medford welcomed back two freshmen starting infielders from injury — shortstop Jenna Stevens and first baseman Kelsey Leming.
