Challengers split softball twin bill

MERRILL — Chessa Fait fired a pair of two-hitters, but could only conjure up one win for the Cascade Christian softball team on Wednesday.

Fait was dominant in an opening-game, 3-1 win over District 4 foe Lost River, striking out eight for her sixth win of the season.

She fanned three in the nightcap, but Lost River rallied in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 2-1 triumph.

"Chessa pitched well in both games," said Cascade Christian coach Wally Nye.

The Challengers (6-3, 4-2 District 4) trailed 1-0 in the opener until a three-run sixth inning turned the tide.

"It was getting cold out there and we finally pulled through," said Nye.

Brandi Johnson singled to open the rally, and Nikki Jones followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Theresa Gomez then belted a two-run double to put Cascade Christian on top, and later scored on a passed ball for the final tally.

Debbie Gettman also had a double in the opener for the Challengers.

The score was tied at 1-all in the nightcap heading into the seventh inning when Brittany Biondi smacked a one-out double for the Challengers. Unfortunately the effort went for naught as Cascade was unable to bring her home.

"We had a chance to score but just didn't get it quite done," said Nye.

The same couldn't be said for Lost River, however, as the Raiders (4-1 Dist. 4) pushed over the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single by Katelyn Gesser.

Rebecca Fronek had the only other hit for Cascade Christian in Game 2.
