North stymies Roseburg in boys tennis

The North Medford boys tennis team has been playing well all spring, but the Black Tornado took it up a notch Thursday in a nonconference sweep over Roseburg.

North Medford didn't drop a set in cruising past the Indians 8-0 at Varsity Courts.

"These boys are starting to get it figured out here," said North coach Hal Borg. "They did a good job tonight. The boys showed a lot of intensity."

North's top doubles teams of Tanner Borg and David Longmire and Austin Schoenlein and David Tribble were especially on top of their games Thursday, dropping only three games combined.

"I think Tanner and David Longmire played by far their best match of the season," said coach Borg, "and the same thing could be said at No. 2 doubles with Austin and David Tribble."

Top singles player Michael Tribble found stiff competition in Roseburg's Jordan Santos, but was still able to manage a 6-3, 6-2 victory for North Medford (6-1).

"Michael Tribble was tested by a good singles player," said the coach, "but he made some good adjustments and put the match away."

Colt Hoeptner, who according to his coach "has been on fire," continued his hot streak with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Derrick Foley at No. 2 singles.

While the top players have played up to expectations, Hal Borg said he was especially pleased with his No. 3 and 4 singles and doubles players on Thursday.

"Most impressive for me was the overall improvement for the whole team from top to bottom," said the coach. "Our No. 1 and 2 singles and doubles have been dominant all season, but our No. 3s and 4s have really improved."

That team depth will come in handy next Friday and Saturday when the Black Tornado heads north for the eight-team Jesuit Invitational.
