Roseburg's Endicott blanks South

ROSEBURG — Mikayla Endicott blanked South Medford on the mound and freshman Crysta Conn provided a spark with the bat as Roseburg cruised to a Southwest Conference softball doubleheader victory Saturday.

The second-ranked Indians defeated South Medford, 6-0 and 8-0.

"They're a very good team," South Medford coach Dan Marshall said, "and deserve the No. 2 ranking in the state."

Endicott allowed one hit in the opener with 10 strikeouts in five innings of work, and struck out six in four innings of shutout ball in the nightcap.

The Panthers (4-8, 1-2 SWC) only hit in the opener was a one-out, fourth-inning single by Samantha Matarese.

"(Endicott) was in control from the first inning," said Marshall. "She has a lot of pop in her fastball. She's smart and keeps you off balance. She has the full array of pitches."

Conn had a triple and homer in Game 1 and added a double in the second game. Conn's third inning, three-run homer gave the Indians (12-0, 3-0 SWC) a 4-0 lead.

"(Conn) has all the tools," said Marshall. "She even came in and threw the last two innings of the second game."

Marshall said he was encouraged by the performance from Panther sophomore pitcher Jessica Mondale in the opener. On Conn's third-inning homer, Marshall said there was a mix-up with the sign.

"We called a changeup, but (Mondale) threw a curve inside and Conn turned on it," said the South coach. "For the most part she hit her spots, but just made a couple of bad pitches."

In Game 2, South had an early opportunity against Endicott. Matarese, the No. 2 hitter, was hit by a pitch and Ralena Rollie singled. But with runners on second and third, Alyssa Dixon flew out to right to end the first inning.

"We battled and competed," said Marshall. "Obviously we had trouble hitting the ball off of Endicott. But when you have Endicott throwing at you, not a lot of teams will hit much off her."
