GP pins first defeat on North
GRANTS PASS — North Medford had its perfect baseball record tarnished Monday, courtesy of Zach Morgan and the Grants Pass Cavemen in the opening game of a rescheduled Southwest Conference twin bill.
Morgan allowed two hits, one walk and a run in the first inning, then allowed only two base runners the rest of the way in leading Grants Pass to a 6-2 upset.
The top-ranked Black Tornado (13-1, 2-1 SWC) rebounded to earn a 14-5 victory in the nightcap.
"I think we were prepared to play, we just didn't bring our 'A' game and they capitalized," said North coach Brett Wolfe.
"It's good for us to realize and recognize there's things we need to work on to try to get better," he added.
Logan Odom struggled from the mound early in Game 1, walking two and hitting another batter to load the bases in the first. Shawn O'Brien followed with an RBI single, but center fielder Jordan Bostwick kept the damage to one run by teaming with Shea Bedortha and Darren Bruhns to throw a runner out at the plate.
Craig Dolmage and O'Brien then pulled off a double-steal of home and second base to score another run for GP (4-9, 1-2), and Buddy Saxon followed with an RBI single. After getting a line-drive out and walking a batter, Odom was relieved by Matt Maurer. The freshman left-hander struck out Ryan Fauver to close the first.
Maurer struck out eight overall and went the rest of the way for North, allowing a two-run homer to Saxon in the third and an unearned run in the sixth.
Odom hit a solo homer in the fourth for the Black Tornado's only other run against Morgan. Kody Stevens had an RBI single in the first inning.
North Medford regrouped in the nightcap, erasing a 4-3 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning and seven in the sixth to pull away. Bostwick had a key two-out, two-run single in the fifth, while Bruhns and Bedortha had two-run hits in the sixth.
Bruhns finished with three RBIs on 3-for-4 hitting with two runs, with Bostwick and Bedortha each tallying two hits.
