Long ball lifts Crater to doubleheader sweep

CENTRAL POINT — Not even a cold, rainy afternoon could cool down the Crater bats.

The top-ranked Comets belted out 24 hits and got walk-off home runs in both ends of a Southern Sky Conference doubleheader sweep against Klamath Union at Anhorn Field. The scores were 12-1 in five innings and 16-5 in six innings.

Tyler Davis ripped a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 1 and Matt Hunt walloped a grand slam in the sixth inning of the nightcap. Both contests ended early because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The Comets (10-3-1, 5-1 SSC) hit four home runs on the afternoon — Cory Staniforth had two two-run homers in Game 2 — and are averaging 25 hits per doubleheader this season.

"We're still swinging it pretty good," said Crater coach Jay Campbell.

Chris Thomas ran his pitching record to 5-0 after giving up four hits and one run in difficult playing conditions in the opener.

"He didn't have his best stuff," said Campbell, "but the conditions obviously weren't that ideal. He did enough to keep them off balance and get ahead of the hitters.

"A win's a win and he battled through it today."

Zack Boskovich went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in Game 1, while Tim Hill was 2-for-3 and Jesse Warren was 2-for-2 with two runs.

In Game 2, Staniforth went 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBIs, Charlie Reina was 2-for-2 with three runs and Davis went 2-for-4.

The Pelicans fell to 0-4 in the SSC.
