Tornado's Longmire Borg, team for big win
PORTLAND — After recently falling to the state's top tennis duo, North Medford's Tanner Borg and David Longmire seemed to find their stride against last season's state runners-up on Saturday at the Jesuit Invitational.
North Medford placed third out of eight teams as Borg and Longmire redeemed themselves against top-seeded doubles pair Niles Beckley and Brent Kingszette of South Eugene, 7-5, 6-2 in a potential preview of this year's state final.
Michael Tribble, North Medford's top seed in singles, fell to South Eugene's Walt James, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-1, while the Tornado's Colt Hoeptner lost to Sprague's Jackson Martin, 6-3, 6-3.
Austin Schoenlein and David Tribble of North Medford won by default in second-flight doubles over Ryan Kingszette and Kai Tamulonis, who dropped out due to illness.
Nick Hogan and Corey Hisey of North Medford fell to Sunset's Naveen Nanja and Aakash Raj, 6-1, 6-2 in the doubles consolation bracket.
ASHLAND 5, THURSTON 0 — At Eugene, visiting Ashland withstood rainy conditions to edge a short-handed Thurston squad and improve to 3-0 in league play.
Because there are not enough Class 5A tennis teams in the area, the Southern Sky Conference and Midwestern League have combined to form a special district.
Two singles matches were halted early by weather conditions against Thurston, which played minus three doubles teams.
SINGLES — Sean Cleveland, A, d. Matt Ratlyn, 6-3, 4-2; Avi Silverstein, A, d. Jeff Forest, 6-5; Nick Cross, A, d. Jordan Boem, 6-2, 6-1; Min-oh Suh, A, d. Sean Chestnut, 6-1, 6-1.
DOUBLES — John Lacey-John Weighter, A, d. Jake Larson-Kevin Keebler, 6-1, 6-3.
