Late score propels GP over Tigard

TIGARD — Grants Pass came into the postseason on a three-game losing streak.

But the Cavemen turned their fortunes around in a hurry with a 36-29 victory over Tigard in the opening round of the Class 6A football playoffs Friday at Douglas Memorial Field.

The unranked Cavemen (8-3) will travel to Portland to face unranked Central Catholic, a 35-19 winner over Southridge, in the second round of the playoffs.

Grants Pass overcame a 29-28 fourth-quarter deficit with an 82-yard drive capped by Dee Wiersma's 10-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Zach Morgan with 1:37 remaining in the game. Jennings Stewart caught a two-point conversion pass from Morgan to give the Cavemen a 36-29 lead in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Junior running back Criss Bowen broke off touchdown runs of 81 and 71 yards in the third quarter to bolster the Grants Pass offense. Those were the Cavemen's only two plays of the period.

Bowen finished with 210 yards on 22 carries.

Grants Pass fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter, then Morgan hooked up with Stewart and Wiersma for TD passes in the second period as the Cavemen went into halftime with a 14-10 lead.

The Tigers, the No. 2 seed from the Pacific Conference, scored the first two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to retake the lead. Ryan Gorton scored on a 26-yard touchdown reception from Kyle Gustafson with 10:31 left and Scott Grady's 5-yard TD run gave the Tigers a 29-28 lead with 5:34 remaining.

Grants Pass had 458 yards in total offense. Morgan was 19-of-29 passing for 248 yards and one interception.

LINCOLN 55, ROSEBURG 28 — At Roseburg, Lincoln amassed 665 yards of offense and exploded for 42 second-half points to rout Roseburg in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

The 55 points was the most ever given up by the Indians in the postseason.

Roseburg (5-5), the third seed from the Southwest Conference, led 14-13 at the half but Nate Kirkpatrick kicked off a string of 35 straight Lincoln points with a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Lincoln quarterback Jayson Hobby carried 23 times for 345 yards. He accounted for six touchdowns, including TD runs of 1, 59 and 39, and scoring passes of 50, 31 and 45.

The Cardinals (5-5) will meet David Douglas in a second-round game next weekend.

Class 5A

KLAMATH UNION 39, SILVERTON 21 — At Klamath Falls, Eric Chadderdon amassed 359 all-purpose yards for Klamath Union in its first-round victory over Silverton at Modoc Field.

Jefferson will host the Pelicans in the Class 5A second round next weekend.

Chadderdon had 163 yards on kick returns, 63 on punt returns, 47 on interception returns, 39 rushing and 87 receiving. Chadderdon also had two touchdowns, including a 95-yard kick return in the first quarter.

Mark Brooks added three touchdowns — a 12-yard catch from Jon Amos and TD runs of 8 and 23 yards to help KU pull away from Silverton.

Amos threw for 287 yards on 11-for-21 passing and launched an 82-yarder for a score to Aaron Foster, who finished with three catches for 150 yards.

Class 4A

HIDDEN VALLEY 52, BANKS 30 — At Banks, quarterback David Wardle passed for three touchdowns and Dustin Fox and Travis Warren each ran for two as Hidden Valley registered its fourth straight victory with the opening-round win in the Class 4A state playoffs.

The Mustangs (6-5) advance to a second-round matchup on the road against top-ranked Sisters next week.

Junior wide receiver Chase Kearney caught touchdown passes of 27 and 35 yards for the Mustangs (6-5).

Hidden Valley rushed for 378 yards, with Warren gaining 140 on 11 carries and Fox rushing 10 times for 138 yards. Wardle was 7-of-13 passing for 123 yards.

The Braves passed for 216 yards and had 178 yards on the ground. Brad Markham led Banks with 135 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
