Grants Pass comes up short against Central Catholic

PORTLAND — Grants Pass rallied from a 21-0 deficit but it wasn't enough as Central Catholic held on for A 28-19 win in a second-round state-playoff game at PGE Park on Friday.

The Rams built their 21-0 first-half lead on touchdown passes from Nick Green to Darin Devine and Terrance Williams. Gavin Drake also returned a Zach Morgan interception 19 yards for a score in the second quarter.

Cameron Vernoy put the Cavemen (8-4) on the board with a 19-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Central Catholic pushed the lead to 28-7 with a 58-yard TD strike from Jordan Perry to Jordan Freelander but GP responded with another TD run from Vernoy and a pass from Morgan to Buddy Saxon from 6 yards to produce the final margin.

Grants Pass, the Southwest Conference's No. 4 team, attempted an onside kick with about two minutes to play but the Rams recovered and ran out the clock.

The Cavemen outgained Central Catholic 451-361 but two interceptions proved costly.

Vernoy led Grants Pass with 125 yards rushing on 17 carries, while Morgan completed 21 of 38 for 292 yards.

Central Catholic (8-4), the No. 3 seed from the Mt. Hood League, moves on to play Grant in a quarterfinal game next weekend.

SHELDON 35, SPRAGUE 14 — At Eugene, Sheldon's Jordan Johnson had 12 carries 147 yards rushing and two long touchdown runs as the Irish rolled to an easy win against Sprague in its playoff opener.

Johnson had touchdown runs of 47 and 39 to help Sheldon chew up 300 yards on the ground and build a 35-0 lead before Sprague scored twice in the fourth quarter.

Zach Todd added 100 yards on the ground on 18 carries and scored the game's opening touchdown on a 6-yard run. He also scored on a 4-yard run that made it 28-0 following two Johnson touchdown runs.

Sprague was limited to 83 yards on the ground and 228 total yards to 379 total yards for Sheldon.

Sheldon, the Southwest Conference's top seed, faces Lake Oswego next Friday.

Class 5A Playoffs

JEFFERSON 38, KLAMATH UNION 7 — At Portland, Jefferson advanced easily to the next round with a victory over Klamath Union, the No. 3 seed out of the Southern Sky Conference. KU defeated Silverton in its playoff opener but struggled against Jefferson.

The Democrats move on to play Mountain View next week.

Class 4A Playoffs

MARIST 52, ILLINOIS VALLEY 6 — At Cave Junction, sixth-ranked Marist took advantage of four Illinois Valley fumbles and held the fourth-ranked Cougars to 81 total yards in the second-round state-playoff rout.

The Spartans led 38-0 at the half and 45-0 before Illinois Valley found the end zone.

The Cougars' Larry Ragsdale, the Skyline Conference offensive player of the year, finished with 11 yards rushing on only five carries.

Marist (9-2) moves on to play Yamhill-Carlton in a state quarterfinal game.

Skyline-champion Illinois Valley finishes the season 10-1.

SISTERS 55, HIDDEN VALLEY 8 — At Sisters, Cory McCaffrey ran for four touchdowns and Jarred Hasskamp tossed three long touchdown passes as top-ranked Sisters rolled to a second-round Class 4A state playoff victory.

McCaffrey, the state's single-season and career rushing leader, had two 1-yard touchdowns, a 5-yarder and a 63-yarder. Hasskamp had two 40-yard touchdown passes and a 36-yard pass for Sisters (11-0), which scored two touchdowns in every quarter.

Hidden Valley (6-6), the Skyline Conference's third seed, scored in the fourth quarter on Travis Warren's 8-yard run after it was already 55-0.

Sisters moves on to play North Bend next week.
