Petitt wins it as Ashland rallies to defeat Thurston

CORVALLIS — Koko Petitt's 3-pointer with two seconds remaining capped a dramatic comeback as Ashland defeated Thurston of Springfield 54-53 in the third-place game of the Crescent Valley Tournament Saturday.

"Thurston was up pretty much the whole game," said Ashland first-year coach Steve Farley.

Petitt's game-winning shot was somewhat controversial.

After the junior wing sank the trey to break a tie at 51, Thurston inbounded a long pass and thought it had tied the score with a field goal.

"I thought it was a 2-pointer Koko had made," said Farley, "and I thought they tied it, too."

But Farley said the referee definitely signaled a 3-pointer on Petitt's shot.

Ashland (1-2) trailed 27-26 at halftime and 41-36 entering the final period.

Then 6-foot-3 junior post Brenna Heater sparked Ashland's fourth-quarter rally with 12 of her game-high 23 points. Heater also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.

"We did a great job of getting Brenna the ball," said Farley.

Ashland sophomore guard Allison Gida added 14 points, six of Ashland's 15 offensive rebounds, and three steals. But Gida wasn't on the court for the finish.

"(Gida) got elbowed in nose with two minutes to go and blood was gushing," said Farley.

Heidi Siebenlist scored just two points for the Grizzlies, but the senior guard made an important contribution with six rebounds and four steals.

On Friday, Ashland lost its opening-round game in the tournament to Canby, 74-48.
