Comets take lumps in Clovis
CLOVIS, Calif. — The Crater wrestling team went 1-2 against a few of the top teams in California in the opening day of the Clovis West Tournament on Friday.
Crater fell to Buchanan High School, the third-ranked team in California, 52-6, then defeated Del Oro High School 50-23 before falling to top-ranked Clovis High School 52-12.
"We wrestled some really tough competition," Crater coach Greg Haga said. "Any time you wrestle the No. 1 and No. 3 teams, you are going to take your lumps. The scores aren't really indicative of the matches."
Junior Brock Gutches had the most impressive day for the Comets, finishing 3-0 in the 152-pound division with victories against the No. 2 ranked wrestler from Clovis and a ranked wrestler from Buchanan.
Freshman Mike Macuk went 2-1 at 103-pounds and "easily could have been 3-0," Haga said. Macuk defeated wrestlers from Del Oro and Buchanan.
Senior Zach Young scored the fastest fall, taking out Kayd Doemer of Del Oro in 12 seconds. Young finished the day 2-1, also defeating Clovis' 189-pounder.
The Comets have four more duals today.
