South pressure overwhelms Bend

South Medford's defensive pressure proved too much for Bend to handle Saturday afternoon in boys basketball action.

The Panthers forced 20 turnovers overall and built a 16-0 lead over the Class 5A Lava Bears in an 87-59 triumph at South Medford High.

"We had good pressure and got in the passing lanes," said South Medford coach Dennis Murphy, whose team is ranked No. 2 in this week's coaches' poll. "And all the steals we were getting, we were converting into buckets."

After struggling a bit from the field in Friday's 75-50 win over Mountain View, E.J. Singler regained his form Saturday to finish with a game-high 27 points to go with 11 rebounds and four steals. The 6-foot-6 junior post was 12-for-16 from the field against Bend after going 5-for-16 on Friday.

"We surely knew he was going to shoot the ball better than last night," said Murphy. "There were some shots he probably would tell you he should've made last night that he made tonight."

Senior point guard Michael Harthun added 14 points, 10 assists and three steals for the Panthers (2-0). Mitch Singler added 10 points and Brandon Kezer had another solid game off the bench with eight points and eight rebounds.

Senior post Tyler Fristedt had 22 points to pace Bend (0-4), which trailed 51-27 at intermission.
