Cheney, Joffer lead Challengers to victory

With standout forward Scott Morse still hampered by back spasms, sophomore Ben Joffer stepped up in his place to help lead Cascade Christian to a 65-32 victory Wednesday night in Sunset League boys basketball action.

Joffer finished with nine points, five assists and three steals in his first start, but did the bulk of his damage in a second-quarter surge that allowed the Challengers (12-2, 2-0 Sunset) to pull away for the easy victory at the Pavilion.

Joffer scored a basket and added a pair of 3-pointers during his team's first four possessions of the second quarter to help Cascade Christian to a 22-9 edge in the frame.

That effort was complemented by the solid interior play of Jeremy Cheney, who connected on 10 of 19 shots for a game-high 22 points. Cheney was especially on target early, scoring eight points in the first and second quarters.

"Jeremy Cheney did an awesome job," said Challengers coach Brian Morse. "He was playing really strong and taking it aggressive to the basket, which is what we needed."

Brandon Sampson led Coquille with 11 points, while Jake Ayala pulled down seven rebounds for the Challengers and teammate Scott Morse had six assists in limited action.

Cascade Christian gets a day off before embarking on a road trip that includes tough tests against Crater on Friday and Gold Beach on Saturday.
