Gutches, Crater win at NorCal tourney

ANDERSON, Calif. — The Crater wrestling team held a 14-point lead over Red Bluff (Calif.) heading into the final round of the NorCal Tournament, but a dominating effort on Saturday in the placing matches boosted the Comets to a convincing first-place finish.

Crater won six of its seven placing matches to earn 223 points, ahead of Red Bluff at 198. Phoenix's Noah Berman took first in the 171-pound division, but the Pirates dropped from second entering Friday to fourth with 154 points at the conclusion of the 20-team tournament. South Medford finished 17th with 67.5 points.

"I was very pleased," Crater coach Greg Haga said. "I think we were just mentally focused. They knew our goal was to finish the day out. We were in a tight race with the other team and we wanted to ensure the win. I like to see guys battle like that."

Brock Gutches claimed the title in the 152-pound division by defeating Red Bluff's Collin Reid, 5-4. A trio of Comets finished third, including Kenny Fahndrich (160), Zach Young (171) and Darrio Mobley (215).

"Our three in a row that got third, I thought they wrestled better for third and fourth than they did all tournament," Haga said. "Our goal was to finish strong, and we did that. That was our focus coming down here."

Other Crater finishers included: Tyler Winner (145) and Jeremy Artoff (119) in fifth, Brent Espinoza (125) in sixth, Mike Macuk (103), Skylar Prislac (112), Jeremiah Swing (171) and Logan Brooks (189) in seventh and Tony Ferris (135) in eighth.

Along with Berman's top finish for Phoenix, Ryan Black took second at 130, Robbie Blubaugh (125), Luke Amuchastegui (140) and Matt Wiegand (161) took fourth. Ryan Tourville took sixth at 135 and Alex Machado took seventh at 215.

WILLAMETTE TOURNAMENT — At Portland, North Medford had three second-place finishers on its way to sixth place in the 16-team tournament at Willamette High School.

North Medford's Alex Smith just missed the 103-pound crown as he was pinned by Illinois Valley's Chris Culver with one second left in the championship match.

At 135, Ammon Ebert fell to one of Thurston's most outstanding wrestlers, Ryan Arand, who claimed the title by technical fall, 20-7.

Corvallis' Bo Christianson also denied North Medford of an individual title by technical fall, defeating Cory Haggans 23-7 at 152.

Other Black Tornado placers included Ryan Mahoney (third at 145), Cody Wedman (fourth at 130), Mark Dickison (fourth at 160) and Kody Bonham (fourth at 189).

Hockey

KLAMATH FALLS 3, NORTH MEDFORD 2, SHOOTOUT — Zack Brown scored two goals in regulation and had the game-winner in the shootout for Klamath Falls at The RRRink.

Klamath Falls led 1-0 going into the third period before North Medford took a 2-1 lead on goals by Jared McClue and Rex Busalino. Brown scored with 9:52 remaining to knot the score 2-all.

In the three-player shootout, Klamath scored twice while North made just one of its three penalty shots.

Black Tornado goalie Stephen Cole recorded 31 saves.

SOUTH MEDFORD 8, CRATER 2 — Zack MacDonald scored three goals to spark South Medford.

MacDonald opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the second period. After Crater's Aaron Asbeck tied the game at the 12:19 mark of the frame, the Panthers responded with four unanswered goals.

Chris Hallen, Wyatt Small and Lane Littlefield each had one goal and one assist for the Panthers. South also got scores from Megan Sinclair and Jed Rennels. Sinclair tallied her first varsity goal. South received other assists from Andrew Phillips, Kyler Taft and Kyle Smith.

Bryce Crawford accounted for Crater's second goal.

Panther goalie Jon Adamson recorded 23 saves.

Swimming

SOUTH SWEEPS — At Ashland, the South Medford boys and girls swim teams each claimed victory in the All-Rogue Valley High School Swim Meet at the Southern Oregon University pool.

Kelsey Hoeper made it easy for the Panther girls, setting two tournament records in the 50 (25.74) and 100 freestyle (55.76) events and also guided the 200 medley relay team to first place as its leading leg.

South Medford's Melissa Ghiglieri also notched a pair of victories and set a tournament mark of her own in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.33) and helped the 200 medley and freestyle relay teams to wins.

Clark Snyder notched the only individual win for the South Medford boys. He won the 100 freestyle in 50.66 and played a key role in the boys 200 medley and freestyle relay triumphs.

North Medford's Josh Silver broke the meet record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.30.
