Phoenix bounces back behind big game by big men

PHOENIX — A pair of senior post players helped Phoenix get back on track in the Skyline Conference with a 70-48 win against Illinois Valley on Saturday.

Codey Barrett, a 6-foot-5 post, and 6-4 post Mike Shepherd combined for 35 points and Phoenix (8-4, 1-1 Skyline) set the tone early by outscoring Illinois Valley 25-8 in the first quarter.

"We had a disappointing loss against Hidden Valley," Phoenix coach Brian Miller said of the Pirates' 50-48 defeat last Thursday. "We've got seven seniors who play most of the game. They came out and took it pretty personally. We just said we won't let that happen again. I was pretty pleased."

Barrett had 18 points and Shepherd added 17 points and nine rebounds. Andrew George had 13 points — nine in the first quarter — as well as eight rebounds and four assists.

"We just didn't have an answer for their two post players," Illinois Valley coach Jeff Winters said. "We got down early and couldn't recover."

Steven Paul led Illinois Valley (7-4, 1-1 Skyline) with 21 points. The Cougars were looking at a big deficit heading into halftime before scoring 10 points in the final three minutes of the second quarter to pull within 37-22.
