Ashland turns up the heat in second half

ASHLAND — The Ashland High boys basketball team came out flat Saturday afternoon in a Southern Sky Conference game.

But the Grizzlies, less than 24 hours after edging Crater Friday night, turned up the pressure in the third quarter to run away with a 52-33 victory over Mazama at the Ashland High gym.

Ashland (8-8, 3-0 SSC) outscored the Vikings 24-1 in the third period to turn a 21-18 halftime deficit into a 42-22 lead entering the fourth quarter.

"I think we're such a cerebral team," said Ashland coach Larry Kellems. "We have to test our opponents out before we figure out how to attack them."

The Grizzlies did just that in the second half.

Ashland turned to a full-court press in the third quarter to put Mazama on its heels.

"We needed the energy because we were really playing flat in that second quarter," Kellems said. "Our guys really responded in the second half."

Senior post Matt Lipski led Ashland with 13 points, while Jesse Javna and Garrett Tygerson each added 10 points.

Colton Nelson paced the Vikings (1-1 SSC) with eight points.
