Black Tornado continues SWC surge

ROSEBURG — Coming off an emotionally charged victory over South Medford last Saturday, ninth-ranked North Medford made sure there would be no letdown Thursday night in Southwest Conference boys basketball action.

The Black Tornado built an early double-digit lead and cruised past Roseburg, 77-65, to post its sixth straight victory.

"We talked a lot about making sure you step up and respect every single opponent," said North Medford coach Scott Plankenhorn, whose team has won 10 of its last 11 games. "They're not going to lay down for you, and that showed tonight in how hard Roseburg played."

Danny Berger knocked down 10 of 13 shots from the field to score a game-high 24 points, while point guard Michael Williams added 13 points, 10 assists and four steals in a superb all-around game. The senior was 6-for-6 from the field.

"You can't have much better from your point guard than that," said Plankenhorn. "He did it everywhere, he penetrated and shared the ball and got out on transition and shared it. He's been playing really well lately and is definitely a key to our team."

Juniors Josh Pecktol (12) and Jordan Ellis (11) also scored in double figures for North Medford, which improved to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in SWC play. The Black Tornado will next play at Grants Pass on Saturday.

Tim Budavari-Jasper drilled a 3-pointer to get North going on Thursday as it opened a 22-12 lead through one quarter. The Black Tornado led 66-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
