Hidden Valley's defense stifles Cougars in Skyline tilt

CAVE JUNCTION — Illinois Valley first-year coach Jeff Winter was full of frustration after his team scored a season-low 18 points against Hidden Valley on Friday.

The Mustangs weren't exactly an offensive juggernaut but used a suffocating defense to come away with a 37-18 Skyline Conference boys basketball road victory.

"We were inept offensively," said Winter, "but I have to give credit to their defense. They got us out of our offensive alignment and we forced up some poor shots."

Trailing 15-10 at halftime, Winter was hopeful his Cougars could rally after intermission.

"We played a pretty bad half offensively but our defense kept us in the game," said Winter. "We needed to attack on offense and get to the line."

But Illinois Valley (10-8, 4-5 Skyline) made just four field goals and was held to eight points in the second half, while the deliberate Hidden Valley offense put up 22 points.

"They picked up the defensive intensity in the second half and that stifled us," said Winter. "Their defense shut our offense down."

For Hidden Valley, Earl Crawford registered a team-high eight points and Kyle Bleser scored all seven of his points in the second half.

Senior post Will Crowl led IV with eight points. Kevin Snook had eight rebounds and four blocks for the Cougars.

The victory moves Hidden Valley (16-4, 8-2 Skyline) back into first place, a half-game in front of idle Phoenix (12-7, 7-2 Skyline), which had its game with Henley postponed until Monday. Henley stands one-game back in the tight conference race.
