Mazama's Nelson bullies Eagle Point

EAGLE POINT — Since early December, the Eagle Point boys basketball team has been hungry for a victory.

Unfortunately, Monday brought another heartbreaking loss to the Eagles as Mazama got the 62-60 win at Eagle Point High School.

After Eagle Point's David Brasel sank two free throws to knot the score 60-all with 9.5 seconds remaining, Austin Rowley was called for a foul while boxing out Mazama post Kolton Nelson.

With the Eagles in the penalty, Nelson calmly knocked down both free throws to give the Vikings the Southern Sky Conference win.

Eagle Point had time for one last-gasp heave, but Scott Erickson's well-contested shot glanced off the rim.

"He was just a bit off balance," said Eagles coach Tim Dexter. "It was a good look, a good enough shot but it just didn't go down tonight."

Eagles guard Austin Marlia had one of his best performances of the season — 18 points, four assists and only three turnovers.

"He definitely came to play," said Dexter. "He was in the flow of the game and was under control."

Both Marlia and Brasel — 16 points and six rebounds — took the pressure off Eagle Point's top scorer Rowley, who had the assignment of guarding Nelson, who finished with 31 points.

Rowley scored seven points and had four assists, Jonathan Taylor added nine points and Derek Tuttle grabbed nine boards for Eagle Point (0-7 SSC).
