St. Mary's shakes off rust in rout

BONANZA — A long weather-related layoff had little affect on St. Mary's.

The No. 5 Crusaders, off for nearly two weeks since a 60-42 win at Lost River on Jan. 24, returned to action Tuesday, finishing in familiar form by defeating Bonanza 74-26 in Southern Cascade League action.

"We came out in the first quarter really sluggish," St. Mary's assistant coach David Alexander said. "We showed some rust and were a little winded. In the second quarter, we really started to play better."

St. Mary's (17-2, 7-0 SCL) led 11-4 after the first quarter but built that lead to 35-13 at the half after a 24-point second quarter.

Veronica Valdez scored 12 points, Hannah Picknell scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter, Kylee Adderson added nine and three others finished with eight points.

The Crusaders outscored last-place Bonanza (3-15, 0-7 SCL) by 13 points in the third and fourth quarters to record the lopsided victory.

St. Mary's held a 49-24 rebounding advantage in the game. Kylee Adderson grabbed 11 rebounds, five offensive, and Valdez had seven rebounds, along with four offensive.

"We finally got on the boards," Alexander said. "We haven't done that in the past. It was nice to see."

Defensively, the Crusaders forced 29 team steals. Caitlin Carini had five steals and Whitney Adderson added four.

"We did a good job of shooting the gaps in the passing lanes," Alexander said. "I can't really say we were pressuring any more, we were just in the passing lanes a little better than in the past."

The victory marked St. Mary's ninth straight. The Antlers are winless in their last seven games.
