Comets swim strong in prelims

ASHLAND — With three swimmers earning two victories each in the preliminaries, the Crater swim team is poised for another successful afternoon heading into today's finals of the Southern Sky Conference District 5A meet a Southern Oregon University pool.

Callie Kinser and Anya Martinez gave the Comet girls victories four of ten events on Friday. Kinser clocked 26.47 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle for a three-second win, then turned around for a 34-second victory in the 100 fly with a mark of 1:05.52.

Martinez's wins were just as impressive. She had a 22-second victory in the 200 IM, where she timed 2:31.91 and notched an 11-second win in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.77).

Crater's Nicole Pecheny came in second twice with times of 1:04.48 in the 100 free and 1:12.12 in the 100 back.

On the boys side, Kyle Kinser beat out teammate Jeremy Selland by four seconds in the 200 free, with a time of 1:57.24. In the 100 backstroke, Kinser turned a time of 1:00.86.

Selland denied Ashland's Lucas Opgenorth his second victory of the day, winning by a hair in the 500 free (5:20.25). Opgenorth finished in 5:20.41.

DIST 4. SWIMMING — At Ashland, Stephanie North of Henley won the preliminaries for 50 yard and 100-yard freestyle events at the District 4 meet.

Kyla Heath of took home a pair of second place finishes for Phoenix in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke.

On the boys' side, Yuki Suetsugu also had two second place finishes for Phoenix in the 200 yard IM and 100 yard breast stroke and helped Phoenix's IM relay team to a second place finish.

Hockey

EUGENE 2, SOUTH MEDFORD 1 — Senior Ashley Gray scored her first goal of the season for South Medford, but Eugene pulled out the victory on Friday in an exhibition game at The RRRink.

Gray, who started playing last season, found the net off an assist from teammate Zack MacDonald with 54 seconds remaining in the first period.

South goalie John Adamson recorded 29 saves and Eugene's Jessie Dagosta had 20.
