Defending 4A state champion Berman among Pirate winners

ROGUE RIVER — Phoenix's Noah Berman needed just under three minutes last season to wrap up the 171-pound Skyline Conference wrestling championship.

As a senior and a defending state champion, Berman lopped exactly two minutes off last year's needed time, pinning Henley's Jared Schneider in 47 seconds in the 171 championship match at the Skyline district tournament at Rogue River High School.

Teammates Ryan Black (130) and Matt Wiegand (152) joined Berman as district champions as the Pirates finished runner-up to Illinois Valley in the team race with 288.5 points. The Cougars, behind seven individual titles, cruised to 344.5 points and their fourth straight district championship.

Black recorded a major decision victory over IV's Quayde Fisher, 8-1, while Wiegand needed overtime to get past Jarrad Miller of the Cougars, 8-6. In all, five of the weight classes featured a Phoenix-IV championship match.

The Cougars' Sam Winter scored a competitive 2-0 win over Luke Amuchastegui at 135, IV's Jesse Swift, last season's 145-pound winner, pinned Phoenix's Brad Davis in 27 seconds in the 160-pound finale and IV's Tim Pope defended his title at 215 with a major decision (8-0) over Alex Machado of the Pirates.

Chris Culver (103), Rhino Prince (112) and Lance Tausaga (189) also won district championships for the Cougars.

Chayse Garrison of Hidden Valley won an individual title at 119, while Cody Jackson (Henley), Matt Cornish (North Valley) and Paul Gutzman (North Valley) also won district championships.

Henley, last season's Skyline runner-up, took third in the team race with 250.5 points, North Valley (198) was fourth, Hidden Valley (106) took fifth and Rogue River (23) placed sixth.

Illinois Valley will take 13 wrestlers to the Class 4A state championship tournament at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, which runs Thursday through Saturday. Phoenix will take 12 competitors, Henley qualified 10, North Valley five and Hidden Valley and Rogue River earned one state qualifier apiece.

District 3 wrestling — At Myrtle Point, in only its second year as a wrestling program, Cascade Christian finished all five of its wrestlers in the top six at the District 3 tournament on Saturday. Three Challengers placed in the top three, earning a trip to the state meet.

James Humphries, a 285-pounder, was the top finisher for the Challengers, with second place. Humphries was pinned in 4:49 by Jason Smith of Coquille in the championship match. Humphries won his semifinal match over Brandon Neves of Reedsport with a pin in 3:07.

Derek Brite placed third at 171. Brite defeated Michael Hall of Coquille in the final of the third-fourth bracket with a pin in 2:54. Also at 171, Garron Pobuda placed sixth.

At 215, Nic Beiter finished third. Beiter was winning by a score of 14-6 when Paul Marriam of Bandon was disqualified in the final seconds. Beiter won his previous match by pinning Reedsport's Brendan Gibbons in 44 seconds.

Garrett Banks placed fifth at 152 when he pinned Kyle Bounds of Creswell. The Challengers finished in fifth place as a team with 81.5 points. Reedsport took home the team prize with 302 points.

Humphries, Brite and Beiter, with their top-three finishes will compete at the 3A state meet at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Feb. 14-16.
