Prospect slips by Gilchrist

PROSPECT — The Prospect boys basketball team was perfect from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter as the Cougars downed Gilchrist, 65-54, on Monday in a Mountain Valley League contest.

Prospect (9-13, 3-9 MVL) made all 13 of its attempts from the foul line, with Dakota Gordon nailing 12-for-12 to aid the Cougars. For the game, Prospect nailed 18 of 20 from the charity stripe and Gordon was 15-for-15.

Gordon finished with 26 points, while freshman Shane Kelley posted 18 points, and nine rebounds.

Zakk Bennett chipped in with a career-high 17 points for Prospect.

Gilchrist, which is battling Butte Falls for a league playoff berth, led 12-11 after the first quarter before the Cougars mounted a rally to gain a 33-29 lead at the half. Prospect upped its advantage to 50-43 entering the fourth quarter.

PROSPECT 44, GILCHRIST 41 — At Prospect, vying for the final playoff spot in the Mountain Valley League, Prospect knocked down the clutch free throws down the stretch to earn a vital win over Gilchrist.

With the win, the Cougars (13-9, 6-6 MVL) got their third MVL win in a row, but needs to beat rival Butte Falls on Wednesday to make it to the district playoffs.

Although they shot just 50 percent from the line in the game, Prospect went 6 of 11 in the fourth. Jen King, who had a game-high 17 points, hit all four of her free throws in the period and Catherine Anderson had two more late in the game to seal the victory.

Anderson tossed 15 points.

Prospect yielded just 10 points to Kali Smith and Shelby Scevers after the two combined for 38 in Gilchrist's convincing 56-43 victory earlier this season.
