Sunset denies GP state tourney berth

BEAVERTON — Grants Pass came up one win shy of reaching the girls Class 6A state basketball tournament.

The Sunset Apollos proved too strong on the boards against the Cavers big front line en route to a 47-36 victory in a second-round playoff game Saturday.

"They outrebounded us by a lot," Grants Pass assistant coach Nate Olson said. "The rebounding was definitely a key factor. They are also excellent on defense."

While Grants Pass' 6-foot-2 Gabby Randall and 6-1 Natasha Torgerson were dominate in the Cavers first-round playoff victory over West Salem, the pair had trouble with Apollo post Samantha Potter and wing Alyssa Martin.

Grants Pass (16-11), the Southwest Conference's No. 4 seed, was tied after the first quarter and trailed 18-15 at halftime. Sunset outscored the Cavers 13-6 in the third period to take command.

Torgerson registered a game-high 14 points.

"They played a zone and (Torgerson) attacked the basket and went up strong," said Olson. "She played well."

Potter and Martin paced Sunset with 10 points each.
